Has the status of women progressed in the last fifteen years?

Photo: Johanna Unha.This question and the issue of how women’s rights could be promoted further were discussed in the UN in early March. Even today, not all of the world’s women enjoy the rights and protection to which States committed themselves fifteen years ago in Beijing. Now the Member States gathered in New York promised to act to eliminate maternal mortality, promote women’s economic empowerment and prevent female genital mutilation.

Three steps for developing the EU’s crisis management capabilities

The author Pete Piirainen is responsible for defence policy at Finland’s Permanent Representation to the European UnionThe Lisbon Treaty creates the framework for deepening the Common Security and Defence Policy. It is hoped that, with the entering into force of the Treaty, a climate will arise in which the Member States wish to take concrete measures to proceed in this. If consensus is not achieved among all the Member States, with the advent of the Lisbon Treaty the initial steps can also be taken by a smaller group of willing countries.
